As my regular doctor was out on maternity leave (very happy for her btw) I was left in the hands of the other doctor in the practice for my yearly check up. At this appointment, I wanted to address my concerns that I am having difficulty losing weight even though I am actively working to do so.
Dear Dr. ______
I came in for my yearly physical exam this week and during the 15 minutes you spent with me I was able to bring up my concerns regarding weight loss. I explained that I am currently at my heaviest weight ever and I can't seem to get the scale to budge. I came to you for help. I am aware of all the crazy diet pills and tricks and scams out there in the world, but I wanted your professional advice.
What I got from you was overwhelming negativity. You opted to hand me a prescription only after telling me that I needed to be serious about losing weight. You told me that I needed to diet (and only gave me suggestions to which diets I should look too after I asked you to be more specific). You told me that you would not prescribe this to me again if it did not appear that I was taking my weight loss seriously....and based on your judgmental tone and scowl I doubt you think I do.
All in all I felt like a complete and total failure before I even got the prescription filled. I now have 4 days to even get this prescription filled before it becomes void. I did not come to you, a doctor, for sympathetic hand holding or a miracle drug. I came for medical advice, suggestions from an actual doctor on the best way for me to lose weight and your professional opinion on how to proceed. I feel that I got none of that in the short amount of time you set aside for me.
I am currently considering going to one of those diet doctors that advertise in the city's monthly coupon book...they seem nice and hopefully will have a few additional minutes to spend with me regarding my weight problem.
Sincerly,
I dislike your doctoring very much
Prettiness inside and out. Cruelty free product reviews, my forays in to the world of exercise, little glimpses of what it's like to be me.

a visit with the doctor
Sometimes I read articles about how to get more time with your doctor, what questions to ask and whatnot. I've never had an issue with this myself. My doctor remembers the specifics of my life, and always wants to make sure all my questions/thoughts/concerns are answered. This week we did the yearly checkup...and boy did she really get me thinking.
She asked about my eating habits: breakfast: in the car on the way to work (sometimes drive thru, sometimes just coffee), lunch: either at my desk or in the car (usually take out), and dinner: snack food/sometimes a salad.
She asked about my exercise: I aim for Pilates and Dance class every week...but often miss one (this week both). I miss because I can't seem to get out of work in time, no matter what time I start my day. I know I should exercise more, but after a long day where do you find the energy? (Seriously though, if you have suggestions--I'd love to hear them!)
Then my doctor asked how work was going...and I told her. Technically and paperwork speaking I have two jobs. I work for two companies in one office. I regularly work 8 1/2 to 9 hours a day. The other day I was there from 7am-7pm...with no overtime (because two jobs=two time cards). She looked at me and said basically I am not benefiting from this kind of schedule, and that I could not keep it up; she said it's not good for me. Then she said something that has stuck with me all week, "you're being taken advantage of".
Wow. I sat quietly and realized she was right.
Having to own up about yourself to a medical professional really makes you take a look at where you need to make some life changes. It's one thing to discuss life's trials and tribulations with a friend over a glass of wine...but it's quite a different feeling when your sitting there in one of those backless gowns. I need to find some inner strength to make some necessary changes. Wish me luck.
What motivates you? Are there life changes you need to make too? I'd like to hear from you.
Cheers!

a week (or so) in the life
So, I gave online dating another shot...and even went on a date! Then we went out on another...then nothing. Still better than my last couple of online dating experiences though. I also did that thing. You know that crazy girl thing where you kind overly obsess about why that guy hasn't called you back and then you ask him about it (via text...so it turns out really long and embarrassingly pathetic). He, being him...opts not to answer. I have to say, after rereading what I wrote a half a dozen (dozen and a half) times...I probably wouldn't answer me back either. Oh wells, it is what it is. There are some guys in the Plenty of Cupids pool that I've abruptly quit interacting with - now I've been on the other side. Lessons have been learned. I also completely deleted that guy from my phone so that I can go on about my day.
Shop small, shop local they say...so I tried. I went shopping the other day in hopes of finding a dress to wear to an upcoming Summer wedding. There is an adorable little shop in La Verne (The Little Dress Shop). Their Yelp review is here. Unfortunately for me it really was a "little" dress shop...everything I liked was too small for me. As in, didn't even get to try it on because it was all size small. They had a few dresses in large, but by the time I found them I felt like an elephant. Decent prices, a fun mix of new and vintage, and fun jewelry. I picked up a pair of flowery bobby pins for $5.00.
Have you fancied up your water lately? I did. I've been mixing mint sprigs and lemon slices in a water bottle (let it set/"infuse" in the fridge overnight) and voila crisp refreshing water the next day! I also did a day with watermelon mint too...also pretty tasty. They've got all sorts of ideas on Pinterest. Try searching "detox water", I don't know if it's so much of a detox, but it does change it up a bit.
That's my little check in! Hope all is well with you.
I'd always love to hear from you.
Cheers!

best of intentions...worst follow throughs
Drink lots of water
Exercise regularly
What is right? I recently found out from my doctor that my cholesterol is high. I had already spoken to her about my struggle with my weight. I put on 20 pounds in the last year...basically I gained my dog. Now I'm working to rid myself of some of the extra poundage and get back in shape...or more accurately I'm working on getting the motivation. I struggle with the motivation, it's much easier to complain about the weight not disappearing like magic.
Willpower (or shall I say, lack thereof) is my biggest enemy at this point in time. I can get through most of my day just fine and on track...but something snaps at night and I get all munchy...and it doesn't seem to matter on what (candy, toast, cereal, table leg). Then there is the exercise, oh the exercise. I want to get it in...I just don't want to do it...does that make sense to anyone out there? Like I have every best intention then all of a sudden it's time for bed and I'm all like, oops! wait...I was supposed to work out today. Then I set the alarm for early the next day so I can do it first thing, then when first thing comes...I hit snooze.
As we all begin another week, I wish all of you out there the best with whatever you may have going on...oh, and Happy Coachella (Weekend One!)!!!

pretty booked up (my book pile)
Someone suggested that I start reading the Game of Thrones series, and offered to let me borrow their set...then I looked around and realized that my current TBR (to be read) pile is growing at an alarming rate...
Right now I'm reading:
"On Hitler's Mountain", by Irmgard A. Hunt.
A little German girl growing up during World War II. As a small child she really only knows about war and nazis from what she hears from the adults around her. It' an interesting perspective.
"The Skinny", by Melissa Clark and Robin Aronson
Basically, a diet book that talks about how to eat instead of what. Rather than telling you how much kale and tofu to eat, it talks about eating what you want (in moderation of course).
"How to Master the Art of Selling", by Tom Hopkins
I understand that selling and retail will most likely be a large part of my occupation (once I find a job again). So in an effort to be a better salesperson, I picked this up.
It's pretty much just what it says. I'm still not quite sure what I think about it.
"Hope in a Jar, The Making of America's Beauty Culture" by Kathy Peiss
Another beauty history book, this has a focus on products and how makeup went from being forbidden (only daring women and prostitutes dared to wear in public) to being something we can use everyday.
